8:50 a.m., Saturday, April 28, 2001: Starts on the beach at Great Highway & Sloat Boulevard in San Francisco (near the Zoo). Runs & walks on compressed beach normally covered by ocean and exposed by an extreme minus tide. This surface is called flat-pack and is considered the best surface for running.

Winners of the 5K and 10K receive a breakfast for two at JoAnn's, which placed second for best American Breakfast in California by Zagat Survey of Restaurants. First, second, and third place winners in each division will receive a special mug with their place screened alongside the race logo.
